Medieval Kalisz

The defence walls from the times of Kazimir the Great (King of Poland) date back to c.1360. and remains of defence walls with prison tower "Dorotka" dates back to the mid 15th century.
Inside the tower exhibition concerning rifle traditions of Riflemen Association.

St.Nicholas Cathedral

St.Nicholas Cathedral - the oldset church in Kalisz, built in 1253 thanks to the foundation of prince Boleslav the Pious.
Inside you can admire interesting gothic vaulting, renaissance stuccos and stained glass windows from the beginning of the 20th c. In the main altar is copy of Rubens's painting: "The Descent from the Cross".
Next to the cathedral is the oldest secular building in Kalisz dates back to 1448.

The Main Square

The Main Square - with the preserved mid 12th century layout. The Square was completely destroyed in 1914, reconstructed in the 1920s.
Town Hall dates back to 1925 resembles a bit the impressive one which was burned down at the end of the 18th c.

Franciscan Church and Monastery (1257)

Kalisz as Venice of North

Kalisz - Venice of North has 40 bridges. The Stone Bridge the most beautiful and the most spectacular of all, built out of sandstone in 1825 on the order of Tsar Alexander I

Aleja Wolnosci

Aleja Wolnosci - representative street of Kalisz. In Napoleon times called Josephine's Avenue. In the 1990s Heehugowaard / The Netherlands - twin city of Kalisz founded many trees, which not only decorate the alley but also symbolize friendly relations between the cities.

Theatre

Traditions of Kalisz theatre belong to the oldest ones. The first preformances in 1583 took place in the Jesuit College.
The present day edifice built in 1936 (with 409 seats) is the fourth theatre building in Kalisz. The oldest theatre festival in Poland takes place here.
Behind the theatre building there is cemetery - the mausoleum of Red Army soldiers; in front - the Theatre Bridge with a beautiful view over the City Park and the theatre itself.

City Park

City Park - one of the oldest town's parks in Poland, dates back to 1789, one of the most beautiful in the English style with 78 monuments of nature. The solar clock from 1878 staute of Flora from the beginning of the 20th c.

Cadets' Academy

Monumental complex of buildings (former building of the Cadets' Academy, the Military Church and Jesuit College).
The church (1583-96) was first in Poland built by the Jesuits. It housed an astronomical observatory, where Karol Malapert, Belgian, for the first time in Poland used a telescope for regular star and planet observations at the beginning of the 16th c.
School traditions in Kalisz are much older, according to the chronicles in 1396 there was branch of the Cracow Academy.

St.Joseph Square

St.Joseph Square used to be a parade and military drill place. On the 11th of September 1835 Tsar Nicolaus I, Prussian King Frederick Wilhelm III and representative of the Austrian Emperor met here.
The event was accompanied by a military parade and a concert preformed by 3000 military orchestra players.
Monument of John Paul II commemorates a more important event: the Pope's pilgrimage on the 4th of June 1997

Orthodox church

St.Peter and Paul Orthodox Church dates back to the 1920s. One of the very few orthodox temples in the Wielkopolska Region.

Jesuits'Church

Former Bernadine complex dates back to 1607, currently the Jesuits'Church and Monastery. In front of the church column dates back to 1812 commemorates Napoleon's soldiers who were killed in battle.
In the church the biggest in Europe polychromy from the 18th century and copy of the Shroud of Turin.

Asnyk High School

Former Voivodship School (currently the Adam Asnyk High School), previously Secondary school of which Stanisław Wojciechowski - the second President of the Second Republic of Poland - was a graduate.

Zawodzie

Archaeological Reserve in - Zawodzie - the oldest Kalisz quarter. Presumably ancient Kalisia was located here. An early medieval stronghold, one of the biggest on Polish lands, nas been stronghold and some buildings, e.g.foundations of the collegiate church, in which Mieszko III the Old (Kind of Poland) was buried.
New and interesting exhibits, which been discovered, prove that the settlement in Zawodzie had existed earlier than the Polish country.

Neighbourhood of Kalisz

Muzeum of Industry

The Muzeum of Industry in Opatówek is one of the most interesting in its category in Poland. Collection of pianos and grand pianos coming from Kalisz factories which were the best in Europe.
Exhibitions show the beginning of the 19th c. and its rapid development at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries i.e. times described in "Promised Land" by Władysław Reymont.

The Amber Route

The Amber Route - the International Bicycle Track. A picturesque landscape and many monuments of Kalisz Region can be seen by bike.
Details concerning the track can be obtained from Tourist Information Centre and Kalisz PTTK branch (Polish Tourists Society).

The Szałe Lake

The Szałe Lake, situated c.10 km from the city centre. Picturesque lake surrounded by the forest, watched beach, yacht mooring (cruises by a small ship), camp site, motel and restaurant with excellent cuisine (regional specialities).

The Manor and the museum of Maria Dabrowska

The Manor and the museum of Maria Dabrowska - one of the greatest polish writers - museum in Russów. Inside there is memorial chamber devoted to the author of the novel "Noce i dnie" (Nights and Days) who was very much connected with Kalisz and the vicinity.
Nearby there is a heritage park of country buildings with the equipment and farm tools of those times. In summer, family events take place there: "Niedziela i Niechciców" (Sunday at the Niechcic Family) - see calendar of events.

Palace in Lewków

Palace and park complex in Lewków. Classicistic palace if the Lipski Family built in the period between 1786-1791 based upon the project of Jan Chrystian Kamsetzer architect od King Stanislaus Augustus.
Palace rooms in the classicistic style, great illusionistic polychromy, antique furniture and other pieces of art. The park landscape park in the surrounding.

Castle in Gołuchów

Castle and park in Gołuchów. New-Renaissance castle erected at the end of the 19th c. following the model of the famous castles upon the Loara river.
Inside precious collections of art, among others collection of ancient vases, painting and sculpture from antiquity (Egypt, Rome, Greece) till the 19th c.
The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park. The Museum of Forestry and bisons'farm are to be found nearby.

Antonin

The Hunting Palace of the Radziwił Family in Antonin was built at the beginning of the 19th century based on the project done by F.Schinkel - a famous architect.
Frederick Chopin visited the site several times. Presently there is hotel and cafe in this epoque-like interior. Beautiful park surrounds the palace lake and leisure centre are to be found in the vicinity.
